The company, which reported strong financial performance and plans to develop a data center at its Yorkshire site by 2027, said the job reductions reflect no fault in employee performance.
Unions GMB and Unite condemned the move, calling it a betrayal of workers and arguing that a just energy transition requires preserving skilled jobs.
They urged government intervention to ensure workers are protected and that policy supports a fair transition.
Drax employed about 3,250 people globally at the end of 2024.
