Cumbria Council criticizes extended UK doctor strikes over pay and jobs, warning of worsened healthcare delays amid staffing shortages.
Cumbria Council officials have criticized the British Medical Association's extension of resident doctors' strikes, calling it "disappointing" and "deeply concerning" amid existing healthcare workforce shortages and long patient wait times.
The strikes, over pay and job availability, continue despite a 53% ballot turnout, which the council cites as declining support, though the BMA attributes low turnout to voting logistics and training schedules.
Council leaders warn further strikes will worsen delays in diagnostics, outpatient care, and routine procedures, especially in rural and coastal areas.
BMA Chairman Dr Jack Fletcher expressed cautious optimism, citing improved government tone and potential progress through negotiations on a jobs package and phased pay increases.
The Department for Health and Social Care said it remains committed to resolving the dispute.
