Afghan man accused of killing two U.S. soldiers near White House in Nov. 2025 plea not guilty.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and was granted asylum in 2025, pleaded not guilty in federal court to nine charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with a November 26, 2025, shooting near the White House.
The attack killed Army Spc.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and critically injured Air Force Staff Sgt.
Andrew Wolfe, 24, both West Virginia National Guard members.
Lakanwal, who was shot during the incident and now uses a wheelchair, allegedly ambushed the two officers with a .357 revolver, reportedly stolen and given to him by an unnamed source.
Prosecutors are reviewing whether to seek the death penalty, while investigators believe Lakanwal may have been under financial stress and mental health strain.
The case is set for a May 6 hearing.
