Aaron Peterson confirmed as Alaska’s first new federal judge since 2022, filling vacant seat with bipartisan support.
The U.S. Senate confirmed Aaron C. Peterson as a federal judge for Alaska in a 58-39 vote, filling a long-vacant seat left by retiring Judge Tim Burgess.
Peterson, a Republican and former state natural resources attorney, will be Alaska’s first new federal judge since Judge Joshua Kindred resigned amid misconduct allegations.
His confirmation, backed by both of Alaska’s senators and seven Democrats, marks the first selection through a new advisory committee established by Senator Dan Sullivan.
Peterson, a mid-40s Air Force veteran and longtime Alaska attorney, will help address court backlog and improve judicial capacity in the state, which previously operated with only one active federal judge.
