Vizhinjam Port in Kerala, operational since Dec 2024, is expanding rapidly to handle 5.7 million TEUs annually by 2028, supporting India’s maritime ambitions.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the Vizhinjam Port in Kerala has "immense potential" after meeting Maersk executives, highlighting its strategic role in India’s maritime growth.
The port, which began operations in December 2024 with a 1 million TEU capacity, has already handled over 1.43 million TEUs, surpassing expectations.
On January 24, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated expanded work on Phases II, III, and IV under a fast-tracked plan, including a 2-kilometer container berth, a 3.88-kilometer breakwater, and new cranes and yards.
The Rs 16,000 crore project, with Rs 7,398 crore for expansion, aims to boost annual capacity to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028, enabling it to handle five large vessels and next-generation ships.
The development supports national goals like Maritime Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, with Kerala’s chief minister calling it a future global transshipment hub linking Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
