A Supreme Court ruling has prompted a review of Northern Ireland’s religious education curriculum, which was found to violate human rights by lacking objectivity and pluralism.
While Christianity will remain central due to its historical and cultural significance, a new, more balanced curriculum will be developed by Professor Noel Purdy and Joyce Logue with input from educators, faith groups, and families.
The revised syllabus, expected by September 2027, will include global religious and philosophical traditions and undergo formal school inspections.
Updated guidance has also been issued to streamline parental withdrawal from RE and collective worship.
