Trump extends AGOA for one year, restoring trade benefits to sub-Saharan Africa retroactively.
President Donald Trump signed a one-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), restoring duty-free access to the U.S. market for eligible sub-Saharan African countries retroactively from September 30, 2025, through December 31, 2026.
The renewal, following a legislative compromise that shortened an initial three-year proposal, maintains trade benefits for over 1,800 products and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs.
The U.S. will work with Congress to modernize AGOA under the America First policy, requiring partner nations to uphold market-based economies, rule of law, anti-corruption efforts, and human rights protections.
The move comes amid diplomatic tensions with South Africa, including its exclusion from future U.S.-hosted G20 meetings, though African leaders welcomed the extension for providing trade stability.
