Stefan Rowold sentenced to 30 years for arson at Mississippi church, motivated by religious hatred.
Stefan Day Rowold, 37, of Wiggins, Mississippi, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on February 3, 2026, for setting two fires at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in July 2024.
Convicted on six federal counts of arson and civil rights charges after a September 2025 trial, Rowold admitted to vandalizing the church, writing hateful messages, and using religious materials to ignite fires on two separate occasions.
The attacks, motivated by opposition to the church’s beliefs, forced the congregation to suspend services for months.
The court ordered $176,564 in restitution.
The FBI Jackson Field Office led the investigation with support from multiple agencies, and the Justice Department reaffirmed that attacks on houses of worship will be prosecuted fully under federal law.
