Seven died when the fishing vessel Lily Jean sank off Cape Ann on January 30, 2026; investigation ongoing.
On January 30, 2026, the fishing vessel Lily Jean sank off Cape Ann, Massachusetts, while returning to port to repair gear, killing seven people, including the captain and a NOAA observer. There was no mayday call, but an emergency beacon was turned on. A debris field, an empty life raft, and one body were discovered during the Coast Guard's 1,047 square mile search. Because of the deep waters and lack of survivors, the search was halted. The victims will be remembered at the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial, and the cause is still being looked into.
