Senate Republicans warn Chinese vape pens linked to smartphones may enable espionage and fund Chinese military programs via illicit sales.
A group of Senate Republicans has warned that Chinese-made vape pens, particularly those connecting to smartphones, may pose national security risks by enabling data breaches, malware, or espionage, potentially targeting U.S. military personnel.
In a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the senators cited ties between Chinese industry and state intelligence, expressing concern that profits from illicit vape sales could fund Chinese military and technology programs.
They also noted links to Mexican drug cartels using the devices for money laundering, including from fentanyl trafficking.
The warning follows former President Trump’s efforts to block Chinese vape shipments, including a $90 million seizure at U.S. ports.
Los republicanos del Senado advierten que los bolígrafos de vape chinos vinculados a teléfonos inteligentes pueden permitir el espionaje y financiar programas militares chinos a través de ventas ilícitas.
