A rare giant phantom jellyfish was filmed during an Argentinian-led deep-sea expedition off Argentina’s coast, revealing an unexpectedly rich ecosystem.
The mission, using the ROV SuBastian aboard the Falkor (too), discovered a massive Bathelia candida coral reef—larger than Vatican City—far south of its known range, along with 28 potentially new species, a deep-water whale fall nearly 4 kilometers below the surface, and an active cold seep.
Researchers also observed juvenile fish near the jellyfish, which can reach 1 meter in bell diameter and 10 meters in arm span.
Despite the remote location, human debris including plastic and a VHS tape was found, highlighting widespread pollution.
Scientists emphasized the fragility and biodiversity of these deep-sea habitats, urging conservation efforts to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
