NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran on trial for manslaughter after allegedly throwing a cooler at a fleeing suspect who died in a crash during a 2023 Bronx sting.
NYPD Sergeant Erik Duran is on trial for manslaughter after allegedly throwing a plastic cooler filled with ice, water, and soda at Eric Duprey, a 30-year-old man fleeing on a motorized scooter during a Bronx narcotics sting in August 2023.
Duprey crashed into a tree and died from head injuries.
Duran claims he acted to protect fellow officers, saying he believed Duprey would crash into them and had no time to warn others or take alternative action.
Prosecutors argue he had time to avoid the situation or alert colleagues instead of using the cooler.
Duran faces charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and assault.
The nonjury trial, prosecuted by the state attorney general’s office, concluded with closing arguments, and a verdict may follow shortly.
