New Zealand proposes closing Auckland’s Westbridge School over safety, education, and governance issues, with a decision expected by late 2026.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Education has proposed closing Westbridge Residential School in Auckland due to ongoing safety and educational concerns, following a two-year review.
The school, serving children with severe behavioral challenges, had only six students in mid-2024 and has faced repeated incidents of physical assaults and inadequate incident documentation despite staff training and improved mental health services.
ERO found the curriculum unfit for secondary students, especially as the school now serves older teens with complex needs.
Governance issues, including a strained shared board with another school and historical abuse claims, have compounded challenges.
While current students are not considered at the same risk as before, the ministry doubts the school can meet student needs.
Public consultation ends March 15, with a closure decision expected by July or August 2026.
