New Zealand expands Māori language education in 2026 with teacher training, new curricula, and school upgrades.
In February 2026, New Zealand’s Education Minister Erica Stanford launched a major expansion of Māori language and education resources, including the Te Ataarangi programme to train 50,000 teachers in te reo Māori through digital tools.
A refreshed draft of the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa curriculum, aligned with evidence-based and culturally grounded learning, was released for public consultation.
New resources include a linguistic handbook for Years 4–8, seven STEM-integrated text sets for wharekura, and hands-on math materials for Years 0–8.
Infrastructure upgrades at schools in Northland, Wellington, and Wellsford were also announced to support growing bilingual education demand.
The updated curricula are set for in-class trialling in March 2026, with full implementation across all subjects beginning in Term 1, 2027.
