New Orleans will use $2.8 million in unspent fines from Entergy New Orleans to repair about 650 streetlights on I-10 and other major roads, starting with the High Rise Bridge.
The funding, from a 2018 penalty over the "Paid Actors Scandal," will replace stolen copper wiring with aluminum, harden poles, and install solar lights in some areas.
The city is also hiring in-house electricians to improve long-term maintenance.
The project, part of Mayor Helena Moreno’s "Lights-On" initiative, aims to boost safety in high-crime areas like New Orleans East, where over 600 lights have already been fixed.
A council vote on the funding is scheduled for February 4.
