A $1.57 million upgrade to Haruru Falls Road, the secondary access route to New Zealand’s Waitangi Treaty Grounds, has been completed ahead of Waitangi Day 2026, sealing a 3.7km stretch of previously unsealed road with paving, drainage, and guardrails.
Funded by the Regional Infrastructure Fund and supported by the Far North District Council, the project improves safety and accessibility for the 160,000 annual visitors to the site.
The broader $10.2 million initiative includes new toilets, a carpark, lit pathways, and protective measures for historic buildings like the Treaty House, with full completion expected by year’s end.
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and iwi leaders officially opened the road, citing the site’s national significance and the need for better infrastructure.
