Kenya launched green plates for EVs and e-bikes in 2026, boosting clean transport with incentives and infrastructure.
Kenya has introduced green number plates for electric vehicles and e-bikes to support its national electric mobility strategy, aiming to cut transportation emissions, which made up 13% of the country’s greenhouse gases in 2015 and could rise to 17% by 2030.
The move, part of a broader policy launched in early 2026, includes incentives like reduced import duties and tax breaks, contributing to a surge in EV registrations from 796 in 2022 to 24,754 by late 2025.
The government is also prioritizing EV purchases in public agencies, expanding charging infrastructure, and launching pilot programs for electric buses, motorbikes, and tuk-tuks in cities like Nairobi.
With over 90% of electricity from renewables, Kenya’s clean energy base strengthens the environmental benefits of electric transport, positioning the nation as a regional leader in sustainable mobility.
