JERA, Japan’s largest power generator, has signed a 27-year deal with QatarEnergy to buy 3 million tons of LNG annually starting in 2028, aiming to secure energy supplies amid rising demand from data centers and AI, reduce reliance on Russian gas, and diversify imports.
The agreement supports Japan’s broader energy strategy, including expanding U.S. LNG imports and advancing nuclear power recovery.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal could be worth up to $1.6 billion yearly.
