FBI investigates former Carlyle, IL, police chief over alleged fraud in federal funding for FBI task force lease.
The FBI is investigating Mark Pingsterhaus, former police chief of Carlyle, Illinois, over possible wire fraud and theft of federal funds, according to a search warrant obtained by Capitol News Illinois and the Illinois Answers Project.
The probe, which began in November 2025, focuses on financial records tied to a 2021 lease agreement allowing the FBI’s Southern Illinois task force to operate from the local police station, with federal payments totaling up to $180,000 for renovations and $3,750 monthly in rent.
Pingsterhaus, who resigned in December 2023 and previously attended an FBI leadership course in 2023, has not been charged.
In early February 2026, Jason Herzing, an FBI task force member, was named interim police chief with a $100,000 annual salary.
No further details about the allegations have been released by federal or local authorities.
