Daren Abbey sentenced to 100 years for axing camper Dustin Kjersem in Montana, citing DNA, videos, and lack of remorse.
Daren Abbey was sentenced to 100 years in prison without parole for the October 2024 murder of Dustin Kjersem, a 42-year-old camper, near Big Sky, Montana.
A jury convicted Abbey of deliberate homicide and two counts of tampering with evidence after he attacked Kjersem with an axe, wood, and a screwdriver, then stole his belongings and recorded videos dancing with stolen items.
Prosecutors cited DNA evidence from a beer can and Abbey’s lack of remorse, including appearing joyful in court footage.
Eight family members delivered emotional victim impact statements.
Abbey, who claimed self-defense, apologized and plans to appeal, calling the system “crooked.” Judge Peter Ohman ruled Abbey poses a continuing threat and must remain incarcerated, with parole eligibility after 80 years.
