Veteran actress Hema Malini expressed emotional pride and regret upon learning her late husband, iconic Indian actor Dharmendra, had been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in the 2026 Padma Awards.
Announced on Republic Day, the award recognizes Dharmendra’s six-decade legacy in Hindi cinema, marked by classics like Sholay and Anupama.
Malini said the honor, though long overdue, brought joy to the family and nation, but lamented it came after his death in November 2025 at age 89.
She noted the recognition would have meant more had it arrived earlier.
The award was part of a national tribute following a December 2025 prayer meeting in Delhi attended by top political and film figures.
