U.S. and India agree to reduce tariffs and India to cut Russian oil purchases, pending official confirmation.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with India, claiming India will reduce tariffs on U.S. goods and stop buying Russian oil, in exchange for the U.S. lowering tariffs on Indian products from 25% to 18%.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the tariff reduction on social media, calling it a boost to bilateral ties.
The deal, announced after a phone call between the leaders, also includes commitments for India to increase purchases of American energy, technology, and agricultural products.
While both leaders praised the agreement as a milestone, Indian officials have not officially confirmed the terms, and no formal announcement has been made by the Indian government.
