The UN deploys its first ceasefire monitors in eastern Congo after M23's withdrawal, amid ongoing violence and diplomatic efforts.
The UN is deploying its first ceasefire monitoring team in eastern Congo’s Uvira, following Doha-mediated talks between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group.
The team will oversee a ceasefire agreement reached in October and reaffirmed in November, after M23 withdrew from Uvira in January 2025.
The move marks progress in peace efforts, though violence continues, including a reported drone attack on Kisangani’s airport.
The U.S. is also holding separate talks with Congo and Rwanda, which Western nations accuse of backing M23, a claim Rwanda denies.
