Tropical land may warm nearly twice as much as oceans, a study finds, based on ancient sediment data.
A new study finds tropical land regions may warm nearly twice as much as oceans as global temperatures rise, based on ancient sediment data from Colombia’s Bogotá Basin.
Researchers analyzed a 3.7-million-year record from the Pliocene epoch, when CO2 levels matched today’s, revealing tropical land temperatures were about 3.7°C warmer than now, compared to just 1.9°C for oceans.
The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest current climate models may underestimate tropical land warming due to limited land-based data and feedback mechanisms like persistent El Niño-like conditions.
The results highlight the need for better regional climate projections, especially for densely populated tropical areas.
