Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, a nine-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department and mother of a 2-year-old, died Saturday when a vehicle reportedly ran a red light and struck her car on Route 347 in Smithtown.
The driver, 20-year-old Matthew Smith, was charged with driving while intoxicated and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Espinosa, a field training officer and immigrant from Ecuador, had recently testified in a homicide case and was praised for her dedication.
Nearly $200,000 has been raised for her family, and flags were lowered in her honor.
The crash remains under investigation.
