NHTSA investigates 1.3M Ford F-150s (2015–2017) over sudden downshifts, potential brake lockup, and unintended movements due to transmission issues.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks from 2015 to 2017 over sudden, uncommanded downshifts that can cause rear-wheel lockup and increased crash risk.
The probe, now in its engineering analysis phase, focuses on the 6R80 transmission and suspects electrical connection issues in the transmission range sensor due to heat and vibration.
Some vehicles also experienced unintended shifts to neutral or forward movement while reversing uphill.
Though not yet a recall, the investigation could lead to one if safety defects are confirmed.
Ford says this issue differs from prior recalls tied to a different sensor.
No timeline or fix has been announced.
