New Zealand MP Peeni Henare won’t run again in 2026, stepping down after losing his seat in 2023 and 2025.
Senior New Zealand Labour MP Peeni Henare has announced he will not seek re-election for the Tāmaki Makaurau seat in the 2026 general election, stepping down after 12 years in Parliament, including six as a minister.
Henare, who lost the seat in 2023 and the subsequent by-election in 2025, cited personal reasons, including family, wellbeing, and a desire to focus on Māori issues, particularly for Ngāpuhi and Te Tai Tokerau.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins acknowledged Henare’s contributions and respected his decision, declining to comment on future prospects.
Henare’s departure leaves the seat open for a new candidate.
