A new U.S. groundwater map shows deep aquifers in the dry Mountain West, aiding water management and drought planning.
Scientists have released the most detailed groundwater map of the continental U.S., revealing sharp variations in aquifer depth across the arid Mountain West.
Developed by Princeton University researchers and the Mountain West News Bureau, the publicly available tool uses advanced modeling to show where water is shallow and accessible versus deep and hard to reach.
The map aims to help water managers combat over-pumping, plan for droughts, and adapt to climate change, supporting sustainable water use in regions where groundwater is vital during dry periods.
The project was funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Family Foundation.
