A new £12M urgent care center opens March 31 in Carlisle to reduce A&E overcrowding.
A new Urgent Treatment Centre opens March 31 at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, backed by £12 million in funding, including £5.5 million from North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The 12-room facility, located near the A&E entrance, aims to manage non-life-threatening cases and ease pressure on the emergency department, which saw over 78,000 patients last year—more than double its intended capacity.
The trust plans to improve patient flow with coordinated care pathways, full staffing, and same-day emergency care procedures, targeting full transformation of urgent and emergency services by January 2027.
