A Nebraska judge sentenced Eswin Mejia, an illegal immigrant, to 20–22 years for killing Sarah Root in a drunk driving crash in 2016, leading to new immigration laws.
A Nebraska judge sentenced Eswin Mejia, an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk and fleeing a 2016 crash in Omaha, to 20 to 22 years in prison for killing 21-year-old Sarah Root.
Mejia, who struck Root from behind at a traffic light and fled to Honduras, was captured in 2025 and returned to face charges.
He received 19 to 20 years for motor vehicle homicide while intoxicated and an additional 1 to 2 years for failing to appear in court, with credit for 345 days served and potential parole eligibility in 10 years.
The case led to the passage of Sarah’s Law, part of the Laken Riley Act, requiring immigration authorities to detain undocumented immigrants charged with causing death or serious injury.
Root’s family, who campaigned for justice, said the sentencing brought closure, though some still struggle with forgiveness.
