A 10-MW battery storage project in Northampton, NY, approved by the Adirondack Park Agency, will store renewable energy to power 10,000 homes and reduce fossil fuel use.
The Adirondack Park Agency has approved a 10-megawatt battery storage facility in Northampton, New York, after public review and safety concerns.
Led by Carson Power, the project will install two 5-megawatt, four-hour lithium-ion systems on a small site, making it the second-largest in the region.
It will store excess energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuel peaker plants and power about 10,000 homes for four hours.
Conditions include a decommissioning plan, wetland restoration, and fire safety measures.
Despite concerns over battery fires—though rates have dropped 98% since 2018—construction could begin by summer and last six to nine months.
The facility is expected to operate for 25 to 40 years before site restoration.
