A four-year-old boy from Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, died at AIIMS Nagpur on February 1, 2026, after remaining in a coma for over four months following ingestion of Coldrif cough syrup contaminated with diethylene glycol, a toxic substance causing kidney failure.
The syrup, linked to the illness of around two dozen children in Chhindwara and Betul districts, was banned in early October 2025 after testing confirmed contamination.
The company owner and a government doctor who prescribed the syrup were arrested.
A national investigation by the Drug Controller General of India followed, and the post-mortem on the child, whose last rites were performed on February 2, is pending final results.
