Canadian report urges auto strategy shift to favor firms expanding local production, citing Japanese success and U.S. declines.
A new report urges Canada’s federal government to revise its upcoming automotive strategy to prioritize companies maintaining or expanding production in the country.
It highlights a shift over the past decade, with Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda increasing their share of Canadian vehicle assembly to 77% and employment to 62%, while U.S. automakers have reduced output, delayed EV production, and idled plants.
The Trillium Network attributes this to higher productivity and consistent investment by Japanese firms, contrasting with underuse and delays among U.S. operations.
The report recommends policies that incentivize long-term commitment, support domestic production technologies, and leverage the government’s vehicle procurement to attract investment.
Canada has also strengthened ties with South Korea and China, with rising sales of South Korean vehicles and a new agreement allowing 49,000 Chinese EVs into the country at low tariffs.
Un informe canadiense insta a cambiar la estrategia automotriz para favorecer a las empresas que expanden la producción local, citando el éxito japonés y los declives en los Estados Unidos.
