Abu Dhabi has expanded its protected areas to cover 20% of the emirate’s land, increasing the Zayed Protected Areas Network to 26 sites across over 22,000 square kilometers.
New terrestrial reserves include Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, Liwa Groundwater Reservoir, and Ghaf Natural Reserve, while marine areas such as Abu Al Abyad and Sir Bani Yas and Desert Islands were established or expanded.
The move supports global biodiversity goals like 30x30 and the UAE’s National Biodiversity Strategy 2031.
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi is using satellites, drones, GPS tracking, and AI for monitoring.
Major projects include deploying 40,000 artificial reef modules by 2030 and outplanting four million coral colonies, alongside planting over 15,000 Samar trees in Jebel Hafeet National Park.
