Wabanaki Public Health trained 30 Indigenous doulas to combat Maine’s maternal care crisis, but expansion is delayed by funding gaps.
Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness has trained about 30 new doulas, primarily Indigenous, to help address Maine’s maternal care shortage as 11 birthing units have closed in the past decade.
The September training, led by Indigenous doulas from Canada and partially funded by a $385,000 state grant, emphasized cultural, spiritual, and emotional support during pregnancy and postpartum.
The program aims to improve access to culturally competent care in underserved areas, though expansion is delayed by lack of MaineCare reimbursement and federal funding, with changes not expected before 2027.
