Former Senator George J. Mitchell's name has been removed from the U.S.-Ireland Alliance's scholarship program after fresh Justice Department records exposed his prior ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Despite the fact that Mitchell's criminal misconduct has not been proven, the board unanimously determined that the change was required due to recently revealed information, including emails between Mitchell's aides and Epstein.
The scholarship, established in 2000 to honor Mitchell’s role in the Good Friday Agreement, has been paused since March 2024 while the organization raises funds.
The program's goal of fostering stronger transatlantic ties will remain the same, but recipients will now be referred to as U.S.-Ireland Alliance Scholars.
Mitchell has previously expressed regret over the association, but he has denied knowing anything about Epstein's crimes.
