UN envoy urges Cameroon’s conflict zones to reopen schools amid safety threats and education loss.
In September 2019, UN envoy François Lounceny Fall urged Cameroon’s North West and South West Regions to reopen schools, warning that closures threaten children’s futures and national stability amid an ongoing security crisis.
Speaking after meetings with Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, he emphasized the UN’s support for peace efforts and education recovery, citing attacks on 72 schools in the past year.
The government, reaffirming its duty under national and international law, called on families to overcome threats and enroll children, while officials in the South West Region reported positive school attendance and pledged safe learning environments.
