A UK survey reveals 1 in 5 adults ended relationships over salary differences, with major financial tension and avoidance of money talks.
A Nationwide survey of 2,000 UK adults found that one in five Britons would end or have ended a relationship due to salary differences, with an average wage gap of £32,000 between partners and friends.
Over half believe money is too private to discuss, and many avoid financial talks due to fear of judgment, conflict, or resentment.
Some admitted lying about income or delaying major decisions to avoid tension.
While 42% reported negative outcomes from money talks, 33% said such conversations strengthened their relationships.
Psychotherapist Kamalyn Kaur advises focusing on shared values and emotional well-being rather than income comparisons.
The survey was conducted by Censuswide from December 17–19, 2025.
