The Supreme Court refused to block India's 2027 digital census caste data collection, urging transparency in classification methods.
The Supreme Court on February 2, 2026, declined to intervene in a Public Interest Litigation challenging procedures for recording caste data in India’s 2027 census, stating the issue falls under administrative authority under the Census Act, 1958.
While dismissing the petition, the court directed the Centre and the Registrar General to consider recommendations from petitioner Aakash Goel, an academic, regarding transparency in the caste classification process.
The 2027 census, the first fully digital one and the first with comprehensive caste enumeration since 1931, will rely on expert-led methods to ensure accuracy, with final criteria expected by July 2026.
