Over 190 Hong Kong students start year-long STEAM project to prepare rare beaked whale skeleton for 2027 public display, highlighting marine conservation.
Over 190 secondary students from 13 Hong Kong schools began a year-long STEAM programme on February 1, 2026, to prepare a rare Longman’s beaked whale skeleton for public display in 2027.
Led by Lingnan University with partners including The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, the project uses the 2024 whale stranding to teach students skeleton preparation, science, and conservation.
Activities include hands-on work, lectures, and art, aiming to raise awareness about marine threats like plastic pollution.
Two exhibitions in 2027 will feature the whale and local species, including a plastic-filled bag found in its stomach.
