Māori theatre company Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu tours *Out the Gate*, a play based on real stories of trauma and healing in Māori communities, using traditional values to foster reconciliation.
Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu, Aotearoa’s longest-standing independent Māori theatre company, continues using storytelling rooted in tikanga Māori to address trauma and healing in Māori communities.
Their recent production, *Out the Gate*, draws on verbatim accounts from nearly 50 whānau affected by state care, youth justice, and incarceration, tracing pathways from childhood trauma to prison.
Performed on marae and in prisons, the show is followed by facilitated kōrero sessions with audiences including formerly incarcerated individuals, social workers, and probation officers.
Co-founded by psychiatric nurse Jim Moriarty and psychologist Helen Pearse-Otene, the work emphasizes whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and whakapapa as tools for healing and tino rangatiratanga.
The company plans to tour *Out the Gate* and develop a new production, *Don’t Vote, Don’t Moan*.
