Leon Levy, the last surviving signatory of South Africa’s Freedom Charter and a key figure in the 1956 Treason Trial, has died at 96 in Cape Town.
A lifelong anti-apartheid activist and trade unionist, he helped organize the 1955 Congress of the People and was arrested with his twin brother Norman, later acquitted in 1961.
President Cyril Ramaphosa mourned his death, honoring Levy’s role in shaping democratic South Africa and the enduring legacy of the Freedom Charter, which influenced the nation’s Constitution.
The president also marked the 70th anniversary of the Treason Trial and 30th anniversary of the Constitution in 2026.
