The Supreme Court of India has ordered the central government to establish a Water Disputes Tribunal within one month to resolve the long-standing water conflict between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Pennaiyar River.
The February 2, 2026, ruling by Justices Vikram Nath and N.V. Anjaria directs the Centre to issue a notification under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, to constitute the tribunal.
The decision follows Tamil Nadu’s 2018 petition alleging Karnataka’s upstream dams and diversions have reduced downstream water flow, harming agriculture and drinking water supplies.
