Illawarra cricket legend Barry Bates, 2024 Hall of Fame inductee, dies at 81 after illness.
Barry Bates, a celebrated Illawarra pace bowler and 2024 Illawarra Cricket Hall of Fame inductee, has died at Sussex Inlet after a prolonged illness.
The 6'3" cricketer, who made his first-grade debut at 15, gained acclaim for his 63 wickets at 3.3 in 1954–55 and a standout 4–50 and 2–29 on NSW debut in 1959.
His career peak came in 1960 when he took six wickets in an innings against a strong NSW side, including Alan Davidson.
Though he never played Test cricket, he was considered for the 1961 Ashes squad.
After retiring from first-class cricket at 24, he returned to Port Kembla and later joined Western Suburbs at 35, leading them to a 1974–75 premiership with 47 wickets.
He finished with 385 wickets and over 2,000 runs for Port Kembla, including a century, and coached for over a decade with his son at the Bradman Foundation.
