Cumbria Wildlife Trust gets £247,676 to restore degraded peatlands and combat climate change.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust has received £247,676 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to advance its Flagship Peatlands project, focusing on restoring degraded peatlands in two nature reserves—Foulshaw Moss and Skiddaw Forest.
The funding will support planning, community outreach, and efforts to improve public access and awareness.
Up to 95% of Cumbria’s peatlands are currently degraded, releasing carbon instead of storing it, and threatening water quality and biodiversity.
The project aims to reverse this by restoring habitats, engaging schools and disability groups, and exploring species reintroductions.
Officials stress the vital role peatlands play in climate and environmental health.
