Bulgaria switched to the euro on Feb. 1, 2026, ending use of the lev.
Bulgaria has officially adopted the euro as its sole legal currency, ending the use of the lev, effective February 1, 2026.
All transactions must now be in euros, and merchants no longer accept levs.
Citizens can exchange lev cash for euros for free at banks, post offices, and the Bulgarian National Bank until July 1, 2026, with unlimited free exchange available indefinitely at the official rate.
This marks Bulgaria’s full entry into the eurozone.
