Sri Lanka allows women over 18 to work night shifts in sanitation and food service starting Feb. 1, 2026, with safety protections.
Sri Lanka has updated its labor laws to allow women over 18 to work night shifts in sanitation and food service roles between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., effective February 1, 2026.
The change, enacted by Labor Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando, amends the Shop and Office Employees Act to expand job opportunities for women in essential services.
Employers must provide safe housing, transportation, and health and safety protections.
The reform aims to boost Sri Lanka’s low female labor force participation rate of about 30 percent and promote gender equity in the workforce.
