The SoundOut jazz festival in Canberra, now in its 17th year, successfully ran in January 2026 without its usual government funding, relying on a community crowdfunding campaign that raised over $15,000 from more than 90 donors.
Festival director Richard Johnson, a saxophonist and advocate for experimental music, led efforts to keep the event alive, resulting in a three-day showcase featuring 26 jazz artists from Australia and abroad.
Despite strong public support and a commitment to artistic innovation, Johnson expressed concern about the festival’s long-term future due to inconsistent funding, warning that without stable financial backing, future editions may not be possible.
