Sixteen-year-old Sam Ruthe broke New Zealand’s mile record with a 3:48.88 run, becoming the youngest to run under 3:50.
Sixteen-year-old New Zealand runner Sam Ruthe set a new national and under-18 world record in the mile with a time of 3:48.88 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, breaking Sir John Walker’s 44-year-old New Zealand record.
Competing in his first indoor race and despite jet lag from a 50-hour flight, Ruthe surged past the leader on the final lap to win.
His time ranks 11th all-time in indoor mile history and makes him the youngest athlete ever to run under 3:50.
Ruthe, who previously set a world record for 16-year-olds with a 3:53.83, plans to race three more times before returning to New Zealand for national championships.
