Iran says it won’t use nuclear weapons, halts IAEA inspections over U.S.-backed sanctions.
Iran’s nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, stated on February 1, 2026, that nuclear weapons have “no place” in Iran’s military doctrine, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful nuclear use and compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
He rejected U.S. pressure, accused IAEA Director Rafael Grossi of enabling Israel’s June 2025 attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, and said Iran has suspended cooperation with the IAEA over security concerns, blocking inspections at three key facilities.
While Iran maintains it has not violated safeguards, it has not submitted a required report on 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity.
A prior agreement to resume inspections is now void after European nations reinstated UN sanctions.
Iran says its enrichment supports future nuclear propulsion needs and that it has sufficient defense capabilities without nuclear weapons.
